Cotton vs Polyester T-Shirts - Which Is Better for Streetwear? | Off-Record

Cotton vs polyester t-shirts comes down to what you are asking the tee to do. For everyday streetwear, a heavyweight combed ring-spun cotton tee (around 7 oz) gives you structure, a clean drape and a fabric that gets better with wear. A stretch polyester jersey (around 215 gsm) is the better call for festivals, hot rooms and travel, because it dries fast, resists creasing and holds print colour. Most people need one of each, and the trick is knowing which goes where.

Is cotton or polyester better for a streetwear t-shirt?

Neither wins outright. Cotton wins on feel, shape and how the tee looks after a year of washing. Polyester wins on speed: it dries quickly, barely creases and keeps busy, all-over prints sharp. Streetwear has always mixed both, from heavy blank tees in the daytime to slick, stretchy jerseys in the club.

The mistake is treating fabric as a detail. A tee is the piece closest to your skin and the piece everyone sees first when you take the jacket off. If it sags, twists or clings in the wrong places, no amount of styling saves the outfit.

How do cotton and polyester tees compare side by side?

Here is the short version, using the two fabrics we actually work with at Off-Record.

Factor Heavyweight ring-spun cotton Stretch polyester jersey
Feel Soft, dense, natural Smooth, light, slightly slick
Shape Holds a boxy, structured drape Moves with you and recovers
Drying time Slower Fast
Creasing Creases, softens with wear Resists creases
Best for Daily wear, layering, cooler weather Festivals, travel, nights out, bold prints

What does 7 oz cotton actually do for a tee?

Weight is the quiet signal. A thin basic follows your body and shows every line underneath. A 7 oz combed ring-spun cotton tee stands away from the body, which is what gives a drop-shoulder, boxy fit its clean edges. Combed and ring-spun simply means the cotton fibres are cleaned and twisted for a smoother, stronger yarn, so the fabric feels softer and lasts longer.

That structure is why heavyweight cotton suits the oversized silhouette. It looks intentional rather than borrowed. A reinforced ribbed collar helps too, because a stretched-out neckline is the fastest way to age a tee.

When is a polyester jersey tee the smarter choice?

Heat, movement and print. A club floor at 2am, a festival field in July or a long-haul flight all punish cotton, which holds moisture and stays damp. A mid-weight polyester jersey with a little spandex moves with you, recovers its shape and dries quickly. It also carries all-over prints well, which is why our Monogram and Ring Tee uses one: 96% polyester and 4% spandex at 215 gsm, with 2-way stretch.

Wear it when the print is the point. Keep the rest of the outfit quiet: black cargos, plain trainers, a cap, and let the monogram do the talking.

How do you care for each fabric?

  • Cotton: wash cool, turn it inside out and dry flat or on a low heat. Heat is what shrinks and rounds off a boxy shape.
  • Polyester jersey: wash cool and let it air dry. It dries fast, so there is no reason to tumble it, and low heat protects the stretch and the print.
  • Both: skip fabric softener and wash dark tees with darks so the colour holds.

Which one should you buy first?

Start with cotton. A heavyweight tee in black or navy covers the most days and works under every jacket you own. Add a polyester jersey tee when you have a specific use: a festival, a holiday, a night that will be hot and loud. If you want a cotton tee with a smaller, quieter signal, the GUESTLIST Box Tee carries a small embroidered stamp on the left chest and a plain back.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100% cotton better than polyester for t-shirts?

For everyday comfort and a structured drape, yes, heavyweight cotton is usually the better pick. For heat, travel and printed designs, a stretch polyester jersey can be the more practical choice.

Does polyester make you sweat more?

It can feel warmer in still, humid air, but a light polyester jersey dries quickly, so it tends to feel less damp than cotton once you start sweating.

What does ring-spun cotton mean?

Ring-spun cotton is yarn that has been twisted and thinned into a fine, strong strand. Combed ring-spun goes a step further by removing short fibres first, which gives a smoother and more durable fabric.

What is a good weight for an oversized tee?

Around 7 oz (roughly 240 gsm) in cotton gives enough body to hold a boxy, drop-shoulder shape without feeling stiff.

Will a polyester tee shrink?

Polyester is far less prone to shrinking than cotton, though high heat can still damage the stretch and print. Wash cool and air dry.
